What Makes a Walt Disney World Resort “Value”?

Walt Disney World’s Value Resorts are the lowest-priced category of Disney Resort hotels, but choosing Value does not necessarily mean the same thing for every family.

For some guests, staying Value is a deliberate planning choice. The parks are the center of the vacation, the room is primarily a place to sleep and shower, and they would rather spend the difference on dining, tickets, souvenirs, or a longer trip.

For other families, a Value Resort is what makes staying at Walt Disney World possible in the first place.

That matters too.

You still get a Disney-owned resort, Disney transportation, Early Theme Park Entry, pools, on-site dining, Disney theming, and the convenience of staying inside the Walt Disney World Resort.

What you give up are many of the room, dining, pool, transportation, and resort-experience upgrades found at the Moderate and Deluxe levels.

The real question is not whether a Value Resort is “good enough.”

It is whether the Value category gives your family what you actually need from the resort.

The Five Walt Disney World Value Resorts

Disney has five Value Resort hotels:

• Disney’s All-Star Movies Resort
• Disney’s All-Star Music Resort
• Disney’s All-Star Sports Resort
• Disney’s Pop Century Resort
• Disney’s Art of Animation Resort

They all belong to the same Disney resort category, but they do not provide exactly the same experience.

The three All-Star Resorts form the most similar group.

Pop Century adds Disney Skyliner transportation.

Art of Animation adds the Skyliner, some of the strongest Disney and Pixar theming anywhere at Walt Disney World, and a large inventory of Family Suites.

Those differences matter when choosing among them.

What Do You Still Get at the Value Level?

The biggest mistake you can make when looking at Disney’s least expensive resort category is focusing only on what the Value Resorts do not have.

You still receive many of the core advantages of staying at a Disney Resort hotel.

These include:

• Early Theme Park Entry at all four Walt Disney World theme parks
• Disney transportation between your resort, theme parks, and Disney Springs
• Lightning Lane purchase access up to seven days before your stay
• Disney-themed pools and recreation
• Quick Service dining at your resort
• Disney theming from the time you arrive

For many families, especially those spending most of each day in the parks, that is enough.

You are still staying at Walt Disney World.

You are simply paying less for a resort that concentrates on the basics rather than adding the amenities and resort experiences found at higher categories.

What Are You Giving Up Compared With a Moderate Resort?

Moving from a Value Resort to a Moderate Resort generally buys more space, more developed resort amenities, and a different style of resort experience.

Compared with the Moderate category, Value Resorts usually have:

• Smaller standard rooms
• Quick Service-focused dining rather than Table Service dining at the resort
• Pools without water slides or hot tubs
• Less extensive recreation and resort grounds
• Bus-only theme park transportation at the three All-Star Resorts
• More overt, larger-than-life Disney theming rather than the more atmospheric environments found at the Moderates

Within the Value category, standard rooms at the All-Stars and Pop Century use exterior entrances. Art of Animation’s Little Mermaid rooms do as well, while its Family Suites are located in buildings with interior corridors.

Most Disney Moderate Resort rooms also use exterior entrances, with Gran Destino Tower at Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort being a major exception.

The Moderate upgrades can absolutely matter.

But they only have value if your family will actually use or appreciate them.

If you are leaving before rope drop, returning late at night, eating mostly in the parks, and spending little time at the resort, paying more for those upgrades may not improve your vacation very much.

The Main Reason to Choose Each Value Resort

There is no single best Value Resort for everyone.

A better place to start is with the feature that matters most to your family.

The three All-Stars are intentionally similar in this comparison.

Their themes differ, and All-Star Music has Family Suites, but there is no reason to manufacture major operational distinctions among them when the resorts share the same basic Value model.

Pop Century and Art of Animation are where transportation and room-type differences begin to change the decision more substantially.

There Are Different Price Levels Within the Value Category

Disney’s five Value Resorts do not all occupy the same price point.

The three All-Star Resorts form the lowest-priced group and are where I would start if keeping the Disney Resort room cost as low as possible is the priority.

Pop Century represents a step up in price within the Value category. The most important functional difference you are paying for is Disney Skyliner access to EPCOT and Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

Art of Animation is more complicated. Its Little Mermaid rooms are standard rooms for four guests, but they can be priced higher than other Value standard rooms. Most of Art of Animation consists of Family Suites, and those suites occupy an entirely different price range.

So don’t assume that choosing a Value Resort automatically means choosing Disney’s least-expensive room. The specific Value Resort and room type matter almost as much as the category itself.

All-Stars vs. Pop Century vs. Art of Animation

The easiest way to understand the Value category is to divide it into three choices.

The All-Star Resorts

Disney’s All-Star Movies, All-Star Music, and All-Star Sports Resorts are the most straightforward version of a Disney Value Resort.

They share a similar physical layout, large themed icons, food-court dining, pools, exterior room entrances, and bus transportation. They are located right next to each other, one starting where the other ends. Walking between them is easy.

For many trips, the choice among them comes down to:

• Theme preference
• Available room rates
• Military discount availability
• Whether you need a Family Suite at All-Star Music

If the goal is simply to stay at a Disney Resort for as little as practical, the All-Stars are where I would start comparing.

Disney’s Pop Century Resort

Pop Century follows the standard Value model but adds one major advantage: Disney Skyliner transportation.

That gives you gondola access to EPCOT and Disney’s Hollywood Studios rather than relying entirely on buses for those parks. You’ll also be able to take the Skyliner to other Disney Skyliner Resorts for their better dining options.

For guests who want a standard Value room but place a high value on transportation, that can make Pop Century worth comparing carefully with the All-Stars.

Disney’s Art of Animation Resort

Art of Animation is the least conventional Value Resort.

Its Little Mermaid rooms function more like traditional Value rooms and sleep up to four guests.

Most of the resort, however, consists of Family Suites themed to Cars, Finding Nemo, and The Lion King.

Art of Animation also shares Disney Skyliner access with Pop Century and has especially strong character-driven Disney and Pixar theming.

That makes it attractive to families who want the resort itself to feel unmistakably Disney.

But once you begin pricing Family Suites, you are no longer making a simple lowest-cost Value Resort decision.

Transportation: The Disney Skyliner Changes the Value Decision

All five Value Resorts provide Disney bus transportation.

For the three All-Star Resorts, buses are your Disney transportation to the theme parks, water parks, and Disney Springs.

Pop Century and Art of Animation change that equation because they share a Disney Skyliner station.

The Skyliner provides gondola transportation to EPCOT and Disney’s Hollywood Studios and a few other Disney Resorts.

That does not automatically make Pop Century or Art of Animation the right choice.

But if avoiding buses for two parks matters to your family, transportation becomes one of the strongest reasons to pay more for one of these two Value Resorts rather than choosing an All-Star.

This is also why the five Value Resorts should not be treated as interchangeable simply because Disney places them in the same price category.

Value Resort Rooms and Sleeping Capacity

Standard Value Resort rooms generally sleep up to four guests, but the exact bedding configuration varies by resort and room type.

That makes it more useful to compare the actual room you are booking than to assume every Value room has the same layout.

Many renovated Value rooms use beds that convert between sleeping space and daytime living or dining space.

Value rooms are designed efficiently rather than spaciously.

That may be perfectly adequate for a family spending most of the day in the parks.

But if four people will be spending substantial time together in the room, the smaller footprint can become much more noticeable.

Family Suites Change the Equation

Art of Animation Cars Family Suite

Two Value Resorts offer Family Suites:

• Disney’s All-Star Music Resort
• Disney’s Art of Animation Resort

These suites sleep up to six guests and provide features you will not find in a standard Value room, including two bathrooms and kitchenette-style amenities.

They can be an excellent solution for larger families or families who simply need more separation and bathroom capacity.

But the word “Value” can be misleading when comparing prices.

A Family Suite can cost enough that the better question becomes:

• One Family Suite or two standard rooms?
• Family Suite or a Moderate Resort?
• Family Suite or another larger Disney accommodation?

Compare the actual price and room configuration for your family rather than assuming the Family Suite must be the least-expensive answer because it is located at a Value Resort.

Dining: Simple and Functional

Value Resort dining is designed primarily around convenience.

The resorts have Quick Service food-court dining and pool bars rather than Table Service restaurants.

For guests who spend most of their day in the theme parks, that may be exactly what they need.

You can get breakfast, grab a quick meal after returning from the parks, or pick something up without building another dining reservation into the day.

Value Food Court at Breakfast

Value Resort food courts are busiest at breakfast, especially from about 7:30 to 9:00 AM, when families are trying to eat before heading to the parks.

If you are planning for rope drop, that crowd can cost you more time than you expect.

Picking up breakfast items the night before is one easy way to avoid the morning rush.

If having a Table Service restaurant or more substantial resort dining options matters to you, that is one of the clearer reasons to look at the Moderate or Deluxe categories instead.

Pools and Recreation

Value Resorts still offer pools and recreation.

Depending on the resort, you will find features such as:

• Two to three themed pools
• Children’s play areas
• Arcades
• Outdoor movies and other scheduled activities

The important category distinction is what you do not get.

Value Resort pools do not have water slides or hot tubs.

If a pool slide, hot tub, broader recreation, or more developed resort grounds are important parts of your vacation, the Moderate category begins to offer things the Values simply do not.

If the pool is mostly somewhere the kids will swim for an hour after the parks, you may not miss those upgrades at all.

Who Should Choose a Value Resort?

A Value Resort can make excellent sense for several very different kinds of Walt Disney World guests.

Consider Value if you:

• Want the lowest-priced standard Disney Resort hotel room available for your dates
• Spend most of your vacation time in the theme parks
• Primarily use the room to sleep, shower, and get ready for the day
• Would rather put more of the vacation budget toward park days, dining, or a longer stay
• Want Disney transportation and Early Theme Park Entry without paying for higher-category resort amenities
• Enjoy bold Disney character theming
• Want Disney Skyliner access and are considering Pop Century or Art of Animation
• Need a Family Suite at All-Star Music or Art of Animation

There is also another family for whom Value makes sense.

For some guests, this is not really a question of whether the Moderate upgrades are worth paying for.

The choice may be between a Value Resort and staying somewhere else off property, or between a Value stay and making the trip considerably more difficult to afford.

In that situation, the Value category still delivers the core Disney Resort experience without requiring you to pay for amenities that do not fit the budget.

A first or once-in-a-lifetime Walt Disney World vacation does not require a Moderate or Deluxe Resort to be special.

Who Probably Shouldn’t Choose a Value Resort?

Value may be harder to justify if you:

• Plan to spend substantial time relaxing at the resort
• Want Table Service dining at your hotel
• Care about having a pool slide or hot tub
• Prefer quieter or more understated resort theming
• Want more room space for your family
• Place a high value on multiple transportation options
• Would be unhappy relying on buses from an All-Star Resort
• Are pricing a Family Suite that begins to overlap with accommodations in other Disney resort categories

The Value category works best when its limitations are things you either do not care about or will barely use.

If the missing amenities are important to the way you vacation, moving up a category can be money well spent.

Disney Military Discounts Can Change the Math

Eligible military families should never compare Disney resort categories using only the normal published room rates.

The Disney military resort room discount can reduce the price of Value, Moderate, and Deluxe Resort stays when discounted rooms are available.

That means the lowest category does not automatically produce the best value for every set of travel dates.

A discounted Value Resort may provide exactly the low-cost Disney stay you need.

But if a discounted Moderate Resort is only modestly more expensive for your dates, compare what the Moderate adds before automatically choosing Value.

The right comparison is the actual discounted price for the room you would book, along with the amenities and transportation that matter to your family.

Walt Disney World Value Resorts are not simply cheaper versions of the Moderate and Deluxe Resorts.

They are designed around a different set of priorities.

You still get the core advantages of staying at a Disney Resort hotel while giving up many of the room, dining, pool, transportation, and resort-experience upgrades that cost more in the higher categories.

For some families, that is exactly the point.

For others, Value is what makes staying at Walt Disney World possible at all.

Once you decide the category fits your budget and vacation style, the next question is which version of Value makes the most sense: the straightforward, bus-based All-Star Resorts, Skyliner-connected Pop Century, or Art of Animation with its strong Disney and Pixar theming and Family Suites.

Choose the resort whose advantages match the way your family will actually use it.
