The Military Family’s Walt Disney World Comprehensive Vacation Planning and Preparation Guide

A Walt Disney World vacation gives military families plenty of ways to save. The trick is finding the discounts that fit your family’s trip, then getting the important reservations made before they fill up.

My goal is to help you get the best savings on the vacation you want. That might mean Disney Armed Forces Salute tickets and a Disney resort, a stay at Shades of Green, or a hotel booked with points. The best choice depends on what your family wants to do, who is traveling, and your dates.

This guide walks you through those decisions and when to make them. If leave was just approved and your trip is coming up quickly, the short-notice checklist near the end will help you get started.

Start With the Vacation Your Family Wants

Before comparing prices, talk about what would make this a good vacation for your family.

You might want several full park days, afternoons at the pool, character meals, or time to enjoy your resort. A family with young children will plan differently from a group of adults who want to stay in the parks until closing. Room arrangements, mobility needs, and afternoon breaks can be just as important as which attractions you ride.

Start with your available dates, budget, and a few priorities. Those give you something useful to compare when you begin looking at tickets and hotels.

Choose Dates With the Discounts in Mind

If you have some flexibility, compare a few sets of dates. A change of a few days can affect hotel rates, date-based ticket prices, and whether a military offer works for your trip.

Start with the Disney Armed Forces Salute offer for your travel year. Disney also calls this its military promotional offer. Look at both the ticket and room offers, since their dates and restrictions differ.

If you are planning before the next year’s military offer is announced, you can still work on the trip and reserve lodging. Choose something that works at the price you are booking. Your agent can check for a better offer later, but a future discount should be a possible improvement rather than something the trip depends on.

Separate Hotel Nights From Park Days

A seven-night vacation does not need seven theme park days. Arrival and departure days, time at the pool, a water park visit, and a day to sleep in can all be part of a great trip.

Work out how many park days you actually want before comparing tickets. Leave space between them if your family would enjoy a slower pace, and choose a ticket whose use period covers that schedule.

Buying more admission does not obligate you to spend every possible hour in a park. Sometimes the best use of an afternoon is a swim and a nap.

There are three big places to begin: Disney Armed Forces Salute tickets and rooms, Walt Disney World Military Theme Park Tickets, and Shades of Green.

Each has its own eligibility rules. Active-duty and retired military families have access to several choices, while qualifying civilian employees, veterans, caregivers, and other groups have different options. Someone can qualify for Shades of Green and regular military-discounted tickets without qualifying for the Disney Armed Forces Salute.

Knowing your category early makes the rest of the planning easier. You can concentrate on the offers available to you and know what identification is needed.

It also matters who is taking the trip. If you are buying tickets for adult children, grandchildren, or friends traveling without you, the ticket’s rules about the eligible purchaser’s presence become part of the comparison.

Choose Tickets for Your Actual Trip

Walt Disney World has two main military-discounted ticket choices. Start by comparing the ones your party qualifies for against the park days you want.

Disney Armed Forces Salute Tickets

For eligible families, Disney Armed Forces Salute tickets are one of the first savings to investigate. They can offer substantial savings, including on trips shorter than the number of days printed on the ticket.

A Salute ticket can cost less than a regular military ticket covering fewer days—even if you leave a Salute day unused. Compare the full price for each choice rather than ruling out a ticket because it includes an extra day.

The available lengths and options come from that year’s offer. For 2026, choices include 4-, 5-, and 6-day tickets, along with the longer-use Disney Celebrates America Military Salute Ticket. A longer-use ticket deserves a look if you are planning an extended stay or more than one visit during its validity period.

Party size matters, too. Salute tickets have a purchase allotment shared by the eligible member and spouse. For a larger group, you might use Salute tickets for some travelers and another ticket for the rest.

Walt Disney World Military Theme Park Tickets

Walt Disney World Military Theme Park Tickets replaced the older regular military-discounted Magic Your Way tickets. The current tickets are available for one to ten theme park days. They are date-based: you choose a start date, and the price depends on your dates, number of days, and options.

These tickets have broader purchase eligibility than the Disney Armed Forces Salute. They also let eligible purchasers buy admission for family or friends traveling without them, with no military activation required at the parks.

They are useful for short visits, additional travelers beyond a Salute allotment, and families who do not qualify for Salute tickets. They also provide another choice when a trip falls outside the Salute offer’s dates.

Which Ticket Options Will You Use?

A one-park-per-day ticket is a good fit when you want to settle into one theme park for the day. Park Hopper lets you visit more than one theme park on the same day—for example, spending the morning at Disney’s Animal Kingdom and the evening at EPCOT.

Water Park and Sports adds visits to water parks and other included activities while keeping one-theme-park-per-day admission. Park Hopper Plus combines those extra visits with park hopping. The choices offered depend on the ticket you buy.

Think about where those visits would fit in your schedule. If your family wants a water park day or a round of miniature golf, compare the ticket upgrade with buying those activities separately. If your days are already full, an upgrade might add cost without adding anything you will use.

Compare Your Hotel Choices

Your hotel is both a place to stay and part of the vacation. Location, room size, transportation, pools, and dining options can make a real difference to your family’s experience.

Compare the total for the same dates and the rooms your party needs. Taxes, parking (hotel and/or theme park), and required fees belong in that total. A room that costs a little more can still be the better value if it saves you another room, includes breakfast, or makes your daily plans easier.

Disney Resort Hotels

If you would like to stay at a Disney resort, ask about the Disney Armed Forces Salute room discount and compare it with the public offers available for your dates. A military rate can be an excellent deal, but another offer or room category can produce a better total for your particular stay.

Military room rates are booked by phone or through a travel agent. The number of discounted rooms is limited, so being flexible about your resort, room type, or dates can help you find one.

Consider the hotel benefits you will actually use. Early Theme Park Entry and the earlier Lightning Lane purchase window can help with park plans. Transportation and a convenient location can make afternoon breaks easier. Extended Evening Theme Park Hours are available at a smaller group of participating hotels.

Seasonal benefits can add value as well. For example, Disney has announced a check-in-day water park benefit for eligible Disney Resort hotel stays in summer 2027. Check the dates when comparing a stay that includes that benefit.

Shades of Green

Shades of Green is the military-owned resort on Walt Disney World property. Its spacious rooms and tax-free lodging make it an important part of the hotel comparison. Rates depend on the eligible guest’s rate category.

The resort also offers Early Theme Park Entry, Extended Evening Theme Park Hours, and the seven-day Lightning Lane purchase window. Those benefits give guests useful planning advantages while staying at a military resort.

Shades of Green accepts reservations one year before arrival. If you have firm dates, especially around a holiday, that is a date worth putting on your calendar. Check the resort’s specials and packages along with its standard rates.

Compare the actual cost and experience with your other choices. Shades of Green can be a terrific value, but a discounted Disney room, a points stay, or another hotel might work better for your family.

Other Hotels and Hotel Points

The Swan, Dolphin, and Swan Reserve, the Disney Springs Hotels, and off-property hotels expand your choices. They are worth exploring for a particular room setup, included breakfast, a military rate, or a loyalty program you already use.

If you have hotel points, check award availability early. Points can take a large expense out of the vacation budget. Compare room capacity, parking and other charges still due, and how you will get to the parks.

A split stay can help when points cover only part of your trip. Just weigh the savings against the time spent packing and moving hotels.

Let a Military-Knowledgeable Agent Help

Tell your agent your military status, budget, travel dates, room needs, and what matters most to your family. They can help compare available resort offers and account for military tickets purchased separately.

Before booking, have your agent explain the deposit, payment dates, and cancellation terms. You will know what is due when and how much flexibility you have if plans change.

Look Beyond Tickets and Rooms for Savings

Once you have the big expenses in view, look at the other things you expect to buy. Photos, dining, rentals, and activities all deserve a quick military-discount check.

Photos and Memory Maker

If you want Disney PhotoPass pictures from the trip, look at the military Memory Maker offer before buying Memory Maker online.

The military-priced version is purchased in person at Walt Disney World theme park ticket windows. The eligible member or spouse presents valid military ID when buying it. You can plan that stop along with any ticket business you need to handle after arrival.

If someone in your group already has an Annual Pass photo benefit, see whether that covers the photos you want before paying for another package.

Dining and the Disney Dining Plan

Disney-operated restaurants do not offer an across-the-board military discount. Some independently operated restaurants do, including participating locations at Disney Springs, Disney’s BoardWalk, and EPCOT. Ask about the discount before ordering so you know what is included.

Choose restaurants your family wants to visit. A discount is a nice bonus at a meal you would enjoy; traveling across property just to save a few dollars can eat up the afternoon.

I am not a fan of buying the Disney Dining Plan without doing the math. Think about what your family would order and compare that with the plan’s price. Sharing a meal, skipping dessert, or choosing a quick-service lunch can change that calculation considerably.

If a dining-plan promotion is available with your hotel offer, ask for the complete package comparison. This is especially useful when traveling with children. Shades of Green does not participate in the Disney Dining Plan.

Strollers, Scooters, Transportation, and Activities

For a stroller or scooter, compare the cost for your whole stay, including delivery. Outside rentals let you use the equipment at your hotel and on the way to and from the parks. Disney’s rentals stay within the parks or Disney Springs, so that difference matters if you need help beyond the entrance.

Ask about military rates when comparing rental cars, airport transportation, and other activities. For flights, check your airline’s military baggage policy. The allowance depends on military status and whether the travel is for leisure or on orders.

A holiday party, golf outing, or another attraction can have its own military offer. Once you know an activity belongs in your plans, check for savings on the dates you want.

Get Your Reservations and Tickets Into My Disney Experience

My Disney Experience brings together your hotel, tickets, park reservations, dining, and Lightning Lane plans. Set up your account and download the app early enough to get comfortable with it.

Connect the people traveling with you through Family & Friends, then link your hotel reservation and assign tickets to the people using them. If someone already has a Disney account, connect with that account rather than creating a second profile.

Getting this done ahead of time makes reservation mornings much easier. You can concentrate on the dining times or attractions you want instead of sorting out a missing guest or hotel stay.

Order Military Tickets Early Enough to Use Them for Planning

You need your tickets linked before making park reservations or buying Lightning Lane passes. That makes the ticket office’s turnaround time part of your planning timeline.

Ask your base ticket office what it sells, the final price, and when you will receive the tickets. If you are ordering remotely, allow time for the office to process your request and complete payment.

Do Your Tickets Need Theme Park Reservations?

Disney Armed Forces Salute tickets require theme park reservations. Date-based Walt Disney World Military Theme Park Tickets do not.

If you are buying Salute tickets, check park-reservation availability for your dates before purchasing. Once the tickets are linked, reserve the first park you plan to visit each day.

Your hotel and dining bookings are separate from those park reservations. For example, booking breakfast inside Magic Kingdom does not reserve your admission to Magic Kingdom.

If your plans change later, update the park reservations along with the rest of your schedule.

Leave Time for Ticket Activation

Salute tickets purchased through a base ticket office need activation at Disney before their first use. Shades of Green supplies activated Walt Disney World tickets, which saves that step.

For tickets that need activation, work a ticket-window stop into your arrival plans and bring the eligible member’s or spouse’s valid military ID. You can link the tickets and make park reservations before this visit; activation is the separate step that makes them ready to use.

Choose the Meals Your Family Will Enjoy

Dining can be part of the fun, whether your family wants a character breakfast, dinner in a castle, or quick meals that leave more time for attractions.

Start with the different types of Disney dining. Quick-service restaurants work well when you want to eat on your own schedule. Table-service meals give you a longer break, while character dining combines a meal with visits from Disney characters.

Look at menus and prices together. Think about what everyone will eat, how long you want to spend at the meal, and whether the restaurant fits that day’s plans. Choose any meals your family particularly wants before the dining reservation window opens.

Give Each Park Day a Loose Plan

You do not need a minute-by-minute schedule to enjoy Walt Disney World. A few priorities for each day will help you make better reservations and spend less time deciding what to do next.

Ask everyone which attractions, shows, characters, and meals matter most. Our Walt Disney World theme park overview is a good starting point. Then explore the individual guides for Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, Disney’s Hollywood Studios, and Disney’s Animal Kingdom to build your family’s list.

Check height requirements and accessibility information for the attractions on your list. Then build a rough day around your favorites, with room for meals, transportation, and breaks.

This is also the time to think about where to eat. A restaurant near your afternoon plans is easier to fit in than one requiring a trip across property. A special meal can certainly be worth the journey—just give it the time it deserves.

And consider something for the adults, too. Military families spend enough time apart. If a date night would be a highlight of the trip, make room for it and arrange childcare and transportation.

Put Your Booking Dates on the Calendar

Some Disney reservations open well before your vacation. Being ready on the first morning gives you the best chance at the meals and experiences your family most wants.

All times below are Eastern. Put the dates that apply to your trip on your calendar, along with a reminder to get ready a few days beforehand.

Dining: Be Ready for the 60-Day Window

Guests staying at Disney Resort hotels, Shades of Green, and the Swan, Dolphin, or Swan Reserve can book dining 60 days before check-in for their length of stay, up to the first 10 nights. That lets you make several days’ reservations in one morning.

Other guests book 60 days before each meal date. For a weeklong trip, that means making reservations each day at 6 a.m. as the next date opens.

Have your restaurant choices, party size, and payment card ready before approximately 6 a.m. Count everyone, including infants. Start with the meal you most want or the one hardest to book, rather than automatically starting with your first vacation day.

If you have the length-of-stay benefit, looking toward the end of your trip can help. Those dates have been available to fewer guests.

You can make dining reservations before buying park tickets. For a meal inside a theme park, you will still need admission and, if your ticket requires one, a park reservation for the visit.

Make your reservations through Disney’s dining reservation website or the My Disney Experience app.

Read the confirmation when you book. It tells you about any prepayment and when to cancel if your plans change.

Tours, Makeovers, Dessert Parties, and Other Extras

A special experience can be one of the things your family remembers most. If a makeover, tour, or dessert party is high on your list, find its booking date before your dining morning arrives.

Many extras use a 60-day window, but they do not all open at the same time or offer the same hotel booking benefit. Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique bookings, for example, have been available at midnight. That is a separate alarm from the one you set for restaurant reservations.

Check the experience’s booking instructions, including whether you reserve online or by phone. This is also a good time to check ages and other participation requirements so you know it works for everyone you want to include.

Seasonal party tickets and special dining packages follow their own release schedules. Watch for those announcements if they are an important part of your trip.

Lightning Lane: Your Window Is 7 Days or 3 Days

Lightning Lane passes are an optional way to spend less time in attraction lines. You can choose where they are worth the added cost rather than buying them for every park day.

Multi Pass lets you select attractions and arrival windows, with more selections available as you use each prior reservation. Single Pass is purchased for an individual attraction. Premier Pass provides one visit to each available Lightning Lane attraction in one park without scheduled arrival windows.

Guests at Disney Resort hotels, Shades of Green, and the Swan, Dolphin, or Swan Reserve can purchase seven days before check-in, starting at 7 a.m., for their stay up to 14 days.

Other guests purchase three days ahead. With date-based tickets, that window opens three days before the ticket’s start date for its valid admission dates. With non-date-based tickets, including Salute tickets, it is a rolling window: each new park date becomes available three days beforehand.

Have your hotel, tickets, required park reservations, and travel party linked before purchase morning.

Arrange Travel and the Things Your Family Needs

With lodging and park plans taking shape, turn to getting there and making the stay comfortable. These arrangements are easier when you know your hotel, arrival time, and daily plans.

Flights and Airport Transportation

Compare flights by both price and schedule. Baggage, seat charges, airport parking, and an extra hotel night can change which flight is the better buy. A slightly higher fare can also be worthwhile if it avoids a very early departure with tired children or gives you a more useful arrival day.

Once you have flights, arrange transportation between the airport and your hotel. Compare a shared shuttle, private transfer, rental car, Minnie Van, or rideshare based on your party size, luggage, car seats, and mobility equipment.

Getting Around Walt Disney World

A little familiarity with your hotel’s transportation will help you plan breakfasts, afternoon breaks, and late evenings. Look at how you will reach each park and whether the trip involves a transfer.

Shades of Green has its own transportation arrangements. The former walkway to the Polynesian is closed, so use the current Shades of Green routes when working out your plans.

If you will drive, include hotel parking, applicable theme park parking, and rental-car costs in your budget. Compare those costs with the convenience a car would give your particular trip.

Mobility, Accessibility, and Family Needs

Arrange essential equipment and accommodations early. A conversation with the hotel or rental provider gives you time to explain what your family needs, from an accessible room to a scooter that works for its user.

Review Disney’s accessibility services before the trip so you know how they work. Disney determines eligibility for its services separately from military disability benefits.

For food allergies or other dietary needs, review restaurant procedures as you choose meals. Build your days around the pace your family can enjoy, with time for medication, meals, and rest.

MagicBands, Groceries, and Packing

MagicBands are convenient, but optional. You can also use Disney MagicMobile or an admission card. Decide what each person will use and have it linked and ready before your first park visit.

Groceries and delivered supplies can save money and luggage space. I have had cases of water delivered rather than carrying them through the airport. Check your hotel’s delivery arrangements and receiving fees when placing an order.

Use our packing checklist as you get ready. Keep military identification, medications, ticket information, chargers, and anything you need on arrival within easy reach during travel.

Your Final Week and Arrival Plans

During the final week, take one pass through your reservations. Check dates and guest names, make sure tickets are assigned correctly, and review park reservations, meals, transportation, and rental deliveries. Buy Lightning Lane passes when your window opens if you have decided to use them.

Look at the park calendar, too. Holiday parties can mean an early closing for guests without party tickets, and park hours or attraction availability can affect your plans.

Complete your hotel’s online check-in if it offers one. Then think through arrival: where you will go first, what you will do with luggage before the room is ready, and when you will activate tickets if needed.

Give arrival day some breathing room. A relaxed meal or time at the resort is easier to adjust after a flight delay than a prepaid experience scheduled close to your landing time.

Before leaving home, make sure the eligible traveler has the original identification required for the military offers you are using. Put it with your other travel essentials rather than in checked luggage.

Start with the things that make the trip possible, then work toward the reservations and extras you want. The order below will help you move quickly without overlooking useful savings.

1. Set your dates and know who is traveling. Identify which military offers your group can use and whether the eligible member or spouse needs to be there.
2. Check rooms and park access together. Compare available lodging while checking ticket dates, Salute blockouts, and any required park-reservation availability.

4. Buy and link your tickets. Choose a seller that can meet your timeframe, link your hotel and admission, connect your party, and make required park reservations.
5. Look for your priority meals and experiences now. If their booking windows are open, you can reserve immediately. Try a few times or dates, and remember that quick-service meals give you plenty of choices without reservations.
6. Check your Lightning Lane purchase date. If you are already within your seven-day or three-day window, look at available selections now.
7. Arrange transportation and essential equipment. Book the airport transfer, car seats, scooter, stroller, or other services your family needs.
8. Finish the remaining savings and arrival plans. Check Memory Maker and relevant dining, rental, or activity discounts. Plan ticket activation, gather identification, and pack.

A favorite restaurant being full does not mean the whole trip is behind. Book an alternative you would enjoy and keep looking for cancellations. Concentrate your effort on the few things that matter most to your family.

Leave Room to Enjoy the Vacation

Once you arrive, a quick look at the next day’s plans each evening is enough to keep things running. Check your first reservation and transportation, cancel meals you will not use before their deadlines, and adjust if everyone needs a slower day.

You have done the planning so you can spend the vacation enjoying your family. An unexpected favorite attraction, another hour at the pool, or a quiet evening together deserves room in the schedule, too.
