Shades of Green and Disney’s Deluxe Resorts can both give military families a premium Walt Disney World stay—but they deliver that value in very different ways.

For eligible military families, the decision isn’t simply whether Shades of Green is cheaper or whether a Disney Deluxe Resort is more luxurious.

Shades of Green at Walt Disney World

Shades of Green gives you very large rooms, stable military pricing, tax-free room rates, useful military services, a strong military-family community, and several Disney benefits that are unusually generous for a non-Disney resort.

Disney’s Deluxe Resorts give you a more immersive Walt Disney World stay, stronger theming, broader dining and recreation, and—at several resorts—transportation advantages that can dramatically change how your vacation works.

The Disney Deluxe Resorts are also not interchangeable.

Beach Club, Yacht Club, and BoardWalk give you walking access to EPCOT and Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

The Contemporary, Polynesian Village Resort, and Grand Floridian offer direct monorail access and very different Magic Kingdom transportation advantages that also include boats and walking.

Wilderness Lodge has boat service to Magic Kingdom.

Animal Kingdom Lodge offers an exceptional resort experience, but without the same transportation advantage.

So the useful question isn’t:

Is Shades of Green better than a Disney Deluxe Resort?

It’s:

Which resort gives your family the combination of price, space, transportation, dining, recreation, and Disney experience that matters most for this trip?

Let’s compare the whole stay.

At-a-glance comparison of Shades of Green and Disney Deluxe Resorts, including rooms, transportation, dining, and military benefits

Price: Compare the Stay You Can Actually Book

Price is usually where military families begin this comparison, and the gap between Shades of Green and a Disney Deluxe can be substantial.

Shades of Green uses military rate categories based largely on pay grade and status.

The rates remain consistent during the applicable fiscal year instead of changing with travel dates, and the room rate is tax-exempt.

For FY26, Standard Room rates are:

  • Category 1: $184
  • Category 2: $237
  • Category 3: $257

Beginning October 1, 2026, FY27 Standard Room rates become:

  • Category 1: $189
  • Category 2: $247
  • Category 3: $267
Walt Disney World's Beach Club Resort

Walt Disney World’s Beach Club Resort

Disney Deluxe Resorts use Disney’s variable pricing.

The amount you pay changes with resort, travel dates, room category, day of the week, demand, and available discounts.

The 2026 Disney Armed Forces Salute provides discounts on eligible Deluxe and Deluxe Villa rooms when discounted inventory is available.

For most eligible 2026 dates, the discount is 25%.

For most nights from June 1 through August 31, 2026, the Deluxe discount increases to 30%.

But the discount does not turn a Deluxe into a Shades of Green-priced room.

You are starting from a much higher Disney rack rate.

That does not automatically make the Deluxe a bad value.

It means the question is whether the Deluxe-specific advantages are worth what you are paying for them.

There are also costs besides the room rate.

Shades of Green guests who bring a vehicle currently pay $17 per night for self-parking at the resort. Disney Resort guests receive complimentary standard overnight self-parking.

The difference becomes larger if you drive to the theme parks. Disney Resort guests receive complimentary standard theme-park parking, while Shades of Green guests currently pay Disney’s regular $35-per-day standard parking rate unless they have another parking benefit, such as an eligible Annual Pass.

So don’t compare only:

Shades of Green nightly rate vs. Disney nightly rate.

Compare the actual vacation you would book.

That includes:

  • Your Shades of Green rate category
  • Your travel dates
  • The actual Disney room rate available
  • Any military or public Disney discount
  • Taxes
  • Parking
  • Transportation choices
  • Any package benefits you would actually use

For current examples and a deeper price analysis, see How Shades of Green Prices Compare with Disney Resort Hotels.

Room Space: Shades of Green Remains Extremely Competitive

Shades of Green Resort Room

Shades of Green Resort Room

Walt Disney World’s Contemporary Resort

Disney’s Contemporary Resort

This is where Shades of Green punches well above its price.

Shades of Green’s room sizes are:

  • Palm Wing: about 450 square feet
  • Magnolia Wing: about 480 square feet

Those are very large hotel rooms by Walt Disney World standards.

Disney Deluxe rooms vary considerably.

Some are genuinely spacious.

Others are not.

Wilderness Lodge and Animal Kingdom Lodge are among the smaller Deluxe rooms, while Grand Floridian and several other Deluxes offer considerably more room.

Disney’s Deluxe Resort room sizes range from roughly 340 square feet on the low end at the Wilderness and Animal Kingdom Lodges to 440 at the Grand Floridian.

None of these gives you the same amount of open floor space as Shades of Green.

For a couple spending little time in the room, that difference may not matter much.

Put four or five people, luggage, souvenirs, and a week-long stay into the room, and it becomes much more noticeable.

Party of Five: Shades of Green Keeps This Simple

Every Standard and Poolside Room at Shades of Green sleeps five people plus a crib.

The setup includes:

  • Two queen beds
  • A fold-down couch single sleeper

Disney Deluxe occupancy varies by resort and room configuration.

Many Deluxe rooms sleep five.

Some do not.

Animal Kingdom Lodge and Wilderness Lodge have historically had more four-person inventory than several of the other Deluxe Resorts.

That means a family of five needs to look at the actual room category being offered—not simply assume that every Deluxe room sleeps five.

At Shades of Green, the answer is much simpler.

If you reserve a Standard or Poolside Room, your family of five fits.

Transportation May Matter More Than the Room

Shades of Green's Bus Stop

Shades of Green’s Bus Stop

Transportation is probably the biggest place where the word Deluxe can translate into a real operational advantage.

But it depends heavily on which Deluxe Resort you choose.

EPCOT Area Deluxe Resorts

Beach Club, Yacht Club, and BoardWalk are exceptionally convenient for EPCOT.

You can walk directly to the International Gateway.

Disney’s Hollywood Studios is also walkable, or you can use boat transportation.

That is a major advantage at park opening and especially at closing.

You are not waiting for a bus.

You are not transferring at the Transportation and Ticket Center.

You simply leave the park and walk back to your resort.

Magic Kingdom Area Deluxe Resorts

Walt Disney World Monorail at Disney's Contemporary Resort

The Contemporary, Polynesian Village Resort, and Grand Floridian have monorail access.

The Contemporary also gives you a direct walking path to Magic Kingdom.

Grand Floridian has its own walking connection.

The Polynesian gives you convenient access to both the Resort Monorail and the Transportation and Ticket Center, as well as a walking path via the Grand Floridian.

Wilderness Lodge uses boat transportation to Magic Kingdom.

Those options can make a meaningful difference to the vacation.

Animal Kingdom Lodge

Choosing Your Walt Disney World Resort

Animal Kingdom Lodge is the important counterexample.

It provides an exceptional Deluxe resort experience, but its park transportation is totally bus-based.

That means choosing a Deluxe does not automatically mean gaining a superior transportation system.

Shades of Green

Shades of Green transportation is different.

Its buses currently provide:

  • Transportation and Ticket Center for Magic Kingdom and EPCOT
  • Direct service to Disney’s Hollywood Studios and Disney’s Animal Kingdom on a shared bus
  • Disney Springs
  • Water-park transportation varies depending on the open Water Park

For either park, Shades of Green guests first travel to the Transportation and Ticket Center.

You’ll go through security at the TTC. For Magic Kingdom, you’ll then transfer to the Monorail or Ferryboat. For EPCOT, you’ll transfer to the EPCOT Monorail.

The system works.

But it adds another queue wait and more walking than you would have using Disney Transportation from Disney Resorts and arriving directly at the park entrance.

Shades of Green buses also operate on schedules rather than Disney’s more continuous bus model, and the buses have limited capacity.

That means timing matters more.

If you miss a Shades of Green bus, you may have to wait a while for the next one.

For complete current routing and the practical realities of using it, see our Shades of Green Transportation Guide.

Disney Deluxe Resorts Have the Stronger Dining Ecosystem

Shades of Green Garden Gallery Buffet

Shades of Green’s Garden Gallery

Shades of Green has enough dining to support a vacation comfortably.

Current choices include:

  • Garden Gallery
  • Mangino’s
  • Evergreens
  • Express Café
  • Java Café
  • Chip & Dale’s Deli

That gives you breakfast, quick meals, a sports bar, table service, coffee, snacks, and pool-area options.

But I would give Disney Deluxe Resorts the overall dining advantage.

A Deluxe can offer:

  • Multiple table-service restaurants
  • Signature dining
  • Character dining
  • Lounges
  • Better integrated quick-service dining
  • Easy access to nearby resort restaurants
Flying Fish at the BoardWalk

Flying Fish at the BoardWalk

The EPCOT-area Deluxes are particularly strong because Beach Club, Yacht Club, BoardWalk, Swan, Dolphin, and the EPCOT restaurants create one large dining area within walking distance.

The Magic Kingdom-area Deluxes similarly benefit from monorail access to neighboring resorts.

Shades of Green’s dining is useful.

Disney Deluxe dining can become part of the vacation itself.

For current Shades options, see Dining at Shades of Green.

Shades of Green Gets More Disney Benefits Than Many Guests Expect

This is one of the most important changes from older versions of this comparison.

Shades of Green guests receive several Disney benefits that people often assume are exclusive to Disney-owned Resorts.

Early Theme Park Entry at Magic Kingdom

Early Theme Park Entry

Both Shades of Green guests and Disney Deluxe Resort guests receive Early Theme Park Entry.

Extended Evening Theme Park Hours

Both also qualify for Extended Evening Theme Park Hours on eligible nights.

That means Extended Evening Hours are not a Deluxe advantage over Shades of Green.

Disney currently lists Shades of Green among the select hotels that qualify for this benefit.

Lightning Lane Advance Purchase

Shades of Green guests receive the earlier on-site Lightning Lane purchase window, just like Disney Resort guests.

Lightning Lane Premier Pass

Shades of Green guests also have access to Lightning Lane Premier Pass.

So when comparing a Deluxe to Shades, I would not make the decision based on these Disney planning benefits.

The meaningful differences are elsewhere:

transportation, theming, dining, recreation, and the overall resort experience.

Disney Still Provides the More Integrated Resort Experience

Receiving many of the same park-planning benefits doesn’t make the stays identical.

Shades of Green is attractive, spacious, and comfortable.

It does not feel like military billeting.

But it also does not try to surround you with Disney storytelling.

Disney Deluxe Resorts do.

The architecture, landscaping, lobbies, music, restaurants, pools, lounges, and transportation systems often work together to create a complete themed environment.

Animal Kingdom Lodge may be the clearest example.

You are not simply staying in a nicer hotel room.

You are staying in a resort built around African art, animals, food, music, and cultural interpretation.

The Polynesian delivers an entirely different atmosphere.

So do Wilderness Lodge, Grand Floridian, and the EPCOT-area resorts.

Shades of Green gives you more hotel for the money.

A Disney Deluxe gives you more resort experience for the money.

Whether that matters enough to justify the price is a family decision.

Shades of Green Has Military Advantages Disney Resorts Cannot Duplicate

Disney Deluxe Resorts have advantages Shades of Green cannot match.

Shades of Green AAFES General Store

Shades of Green also has advantages Disney Resorts cannot match.

Those include:

  • Military rate-category pricing
  • Tax-exempt room rates
  • Military attraction ticket sales
  • AAFES Exchange
  • Sponsored guest rooms
  • A military-family community you will not find at a Disney-owned hotel

Those benefits do not necessarily make Shades of Green better.

But they are real parts of the value equation.

Pools and Recreation: Deluxe Resorts Can Be Destinations

Shades of Green's Mill Pond Pool

Shades of Green’s Mill Pond Pool

Walt Disney World's Beach Club Resort - Stormalong Bay

Walt Disney World’s Beach Club Resort – Stormalong Bay

Shades of Green has good recreation.

It has:

  • Two pools
  • A water slide
  • A children’s splash/play area
  • A hot tub
  • Fitness center
  • Golf immediately adjacent to the resort
  • Other scheduled resort activities

For many families, that is more than enough.

But this is another area where Disney Deluxe Resorts can justify part of their premium.

Beach Club and Yacht Club share Stormalong Bay, one of the most elaborate resort pool complexes at Walt Disney World.

Animal Kingdom Lodge has animal viewing and cultural activities.

Fort Wilderness-style recreation is not part of the Deluxe category, but Wilderness Lodge benefits from its location and neighboring recreation.

The Polynesian, Grand Floridian, and other Deluxes each have distinctive resort experiences.

If you are planning a full resort day, those differences can matter a lot more than they do on a park-heavy trip.

The Disney Deluxe Resorts Aren’t Interchangeable

Once you have decided that paying for a Deluxe makes sense, I would narrow the category this way:

  • Beach Club / Yacht Club: Start here if walking to EPCOT, Stormalong Bay, and easy access to the EPCOT-area dining ecosystem matter most
  • BoardWalk Inn: Start here if EPCOT-area walkability and evening atmosphere matter more than having the strongest pool complex
  • Contemporary: Start here if walking to Magic Kingdom is the single transportation advantage you value most
  • Polynesian Village Resort: Start here if Magic Kingdom transportation, resort atmosphere, dining, and direct access to the Transportation and Ticket Center matter most
  • Grand Floridian: Start here if luxury atmosphere, dining, and Magic Kingdom access are central to the trip
  • Wilderness Lodge: Start here if immersive theming and Magic Kingdom boat access appeal to you more than monorail convenience
  • Animal Kingdom Lodge: Start here if the resort itself is the destination and you are willing to accept bus-only park transportation

Which Should You Choose?

I would make the decision based on the tradeoff your family will actually notice every day.

Choose Shades of Green If…

Shades of Green deserves especially serious consideration when:

  • Price matters substantially
  • You qualify for Category 1 or Category 2 pricing
  • You want as much room space as possible
  • Your family has five people
  • You are staying long enough for room space to matter more
  • You value the Exchange, ticket office, or other military-specific services
  • You spend most of your vacation in the parks rather than at the resort
  • You do not place a high value on Disney theming

For those families, paying several hundred dollars more per night for a Deluxe can be difficult to justify.

Choose a Disney Deluxe Resort If…

A Disney Deluxe deserves serious consideration when:

  • Walking to a theme park is a major priority
  • Monorail or boat transportation will materially improve your trip
  • You plan to spend significant time at the resort
  • Dining and lounges are an important part of your vacation
  • You want a highly themed Disney experience
  • The pool or recreation is part of why you chose the resort
  • You are willing to pay substantially more for convenience and atmosphere

This is especially true for shorter trips.

On a four-night stay, walking from Beach Club to EPCOT or from the Contemporary to Magic Kingdom can have more value than it does on a ten-night vacation where you have more time and flexibility.

Steve Says:

For most military families, I’d start by pricing Shades of Green. The combination of very large rooms, military pricing, useful military services, and Extended Evening Hours makes it difficult to beat on overall value.

But I wouldn’t automatically book it. With the Disney Deluxe Resorts, transportation and resort experience are the factors most likely to change my answer.

The right choice isn’t the resort with the most advantages on paper. It’s the one whose advantages your family will actually use.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Shades of Green usually cheaper than a Disney Deluxe Resort?

Yes. Shades of Green uses military rate categories and tax-exempt room pricing, while Disney Deluxe rates start much higher and vary by resort, room category, travel date, demand, and available discounts. Even with the Disney Armed Forces Salute, the Deluxe-specific advantages need to justify a substantially higher room cost.

Are Shades of Green rooms bigger than Disney Deluxe rooms?

Yes. Shades of Green Standard Rooms are about 450 square feet in the Palm Wing and 480 square feet in the Magnolia Wing. Disney Deluxe rooms vary considerably, from roughly 340 square feet at Wilderness Lodge and Animal Kingdom Lodge to about 440 square feet at the Grand Floridian.

Which is better for a family of five?

Shades of Green keeps the room decision simple because every Standard and Poolside Room sleeps five plus a crib. Many Disney Deluxe rooms also sleep five, but occupancy varies by resort and room category, so families need to check the specific room being offered.

Do Shades of Green guests get Disney Early Theme Park Entry?

Yes. Registered Shades of Green guests receive Early Theme Park Entry, just like guests staying at Disney Deluxe Resorts.

Do Shades of Green guests get Extended Evening Hours?

Yes. Shades of Green guests and Disney Deluxe and Deluxe Villa guests both qualify for Extended Evening Theme Park Hours on eligible nights. This is not a Deluxe advantage over Shades of Green.

Do Shades of Green guests get the same Lightning Lane advance window as Disney Resort guests?

Yes. Shades of Green guests receive the earlier on-site Lightning Lane purchase window available to Disney Resort guests and also have access to Lightning Lane Premier Pass.

Which Disney Deluxe Resort has the best transportation?

It depends on the parks your family visits most. Beach Club, Yacht Club, and BoardWalk provide walking and boat access to EPCOT and Disney’s Hollywood Studios. The Contemporary, Polynesian Village Resort, and Grand Floridian provide major Magic Kingdom transportation advantages, while Wilderness Lodge offers boat service to Magic Kingdom. Animal Kingdom Lodge relies entirely on buses.

What do you actually gain by choosing a Disney Deluxe over Shades of Green?

The biggest differences are transportation at several resorts, stronger Disney theming and integration, broader dining, more distinctive pools and recreation, and an overall resort experience that can become a significant part of the vacation itself.

Bottom Line

Shades of Green and Disney Deluxe Resorts can both be excellent choices for military families.

Shades of Green gives you:

  • Far lower and more predictable room pricing
  • Very large rooms
  • Reliable five-person occupancy
  • Military-specific services
  • Several important Disney resort benefits

Disney Deluxe Resorts give you:

  • Stronger Disney theming
  • Better overall dining
  • More distinctive pools and recreation
  • Premium transportation at several resorts
  • A more immersive resort experience

The real question is not which hotel category is “better.”

It is:

Which one gives your family enough additional value to justify the price difference for this particular trip?

For many military families, Shades of Green will win that comparison.

For others, a specific Deluxe transportation advantage, resort experience, or location may be worth paying for.

That is the decision I would make—not whether one resort has the word “Deluxe” attached to it.

    Hi, Steve!

Thanks as always for everything you do to support military travelers.

I have a question about room occupancy. My understanding was that at Shades of Green, even infants (age 0-2) count toward the maximum occupancy, unlike at Disney resorts. Is that not true?

    Thanks!

      Hi Sue,

      Thanks so much!!!

I’ve not heard that before. The only thing on their site about children is that those under 18 incur no additional room charge with the existing bedding in the room. SO if you asked for a cot ot crib there would be an additional charge.

Plus that puts an additional name on the reservation for someone who does not need a Disney theme park ticket. That extra person would show up in My Disney Experience when linking your room, making things odd.

I just went to make an online reservation to check and it just asked for the number of kids, no age was mentioned…

Steve, great comparison, but truly, for military folks there is no comparison. SOG is geared towards the military family. The bus, discounted tickets, pools and all the restaurants are worth the admission alone!! Stayed there during my mid-tour leave from my 1 year tour in Afghanistan and met my two sons. The assistance SOG gave for that to happen was immeasurable!! Folks, stay at SOG…period!
